Conducting Women’s Groups in the Inpatient Unit: Empowering a High-Risk Population by Preventing Unplanned Pregnancies

Abstract Introduction Women with mental illness are 5x more likely to experience an unplanned pregnancy due lower rates of effective contraception use; they also higher adverse outcomes. Education about women’s reproductive health and family planning not routinely offered in inpatient addiction treatment settings. Methods Weekly groups on the psychiatry unit were led by residents who trained provided a script. Groups focused structured education followed open-discussion format. Data collected included percentage women history use, child protective service involvement, pregnancies, abortions, found group helpful. Special care was taken discuss as tool for empowering make their own decisions contraceptive needs. Results Thirteen sessions conducted, attendance among 42%.
